Halloween

We kicked off the season with pumpkin carving.  I think this was the first year we have ever carved pumpkins!  That may qualify me as a bad mother.

Carter loved the whole process though so I think we will keep the tradition around.  He was very worried each night about whether or not the candles were lit in the pumpkins.

Halloween was a very fun day.  I helped at Carter's Kindergarten Class party and had a blast there.  Jackson had to come with me so his nap was cut short.  This threatened to ruin the night  but luckily snapped out of his grouchiness just in time for Trick or Treating.

Carter knew all along that he wanted to be a Ninja Turtle for Halloween, Raphael to be exact. I thought about making and piecing together a homemade costume for him but then remembered that I don't like doing stuff like that, and am in fact, quite horrible at it.  Target to the rescue.  Jax was my little skunk, a hand me down costume from Carter.  But too cute not to use again.
We had a break through with Carter on this night.  He usually hates to have his face painted.  Last Halloween we had an epic battle, that I ended up losing, and lots of tears from him.  I wasn't going to push the issue again, but I did approach the face paint subject carefully and he actually allowed me!  He would not however, allow me to spray paint his hair.  I didn't even attempt makeup with Jax.

We had a ward party that night with yummy dinner and dessert.  Then we hit the parking lot for some trunk or treating.
The back view of my little skunk.  His tail says "Little Stinker."

After trunk or treating was over, which took all of 10 minutes, the boys were still itching to celebrate.  So we drove around and hit up some local neighborhoods until the boys got too cold.  Both boys loved the experience.  Jackson especially.  Even though he can't eat 97% of the stuff he got, he still loved knocking on doors and yelling Trick or Treat.  I'm not sure he even realized that the goal of the night is to get candy.

We came home and Neil took Carter out for a few last houses.  Jackson and I stayed home and enjoyed a couple pieces of candy.  Carter really had a great Halloween this year as this was the first year he could eat ANYTHING and EVERYTHING in his treat bucket.  He is a huge lover of Kit kats, Reeses Cups, and all chocolate really.  We had to ration out his candy to prevent a sugar high.

My Birthday!

Carter and I enjoy one show together.  We both really like Cupcake Wars and watch it together each Sunday morning.  Neil was a bit worried about Carter enjoying such a "girlie" show so much, but has since made peace with it.

A few weeks before my birthday Neil and Carter were talking about how to celebrate.  Carter's face lit up and he exclaimed that he had a great idea.  I was kept in the dark about the big surprise until the big day.  But let me tell you, it did not disappoint.  Carter thought up this idea all by himself and Neil helped him put all the pieces together.  I must say, it was one of the best birthdays ever!

Carter's plan was to have a Cupcake War (obviously!)

He and Neil both went and picked out 2 different kinds of cupcakes at the store and then both constructed displays for them.  Carter chose Angry Birds and Neil chose a Halloween theme.

The displays both set up in the kitchen.

I was sent to my room while they were setting everything up and then instructed to close my eyes as they brought me out.  I was so surprised to see everything they had done and all the time they put in to it.

Carter explained what we were doing and flashed the official Cupcake Wars Logo!  Some of my family members were there to help celebrate with us and my mom and sister were made honorary judges, along with me.

Carter went first describing his display and his cupcake flavors and decorations.  I wish I had recorded everything he said.  He was so serious about it and very cute.

Then Neil took his turn and explained his cupcakes and decorations.

The judges tasted each cupcake and examined the decorations and then made a decision........

And the Winner of Cupcake Wars is.......Carter:)  He jumped up and down with joy.  Unfortunately the picture is blurry but you can still sense the excitement of his win.

Best Birthday Ever.  How will they ever top that for next year?  We all enjoyed some cupcakes after the competition and Carter insisted on keeping the decorations around for a couple days.

After the competition we loaded up and went to the Pumpkin Walk.  The line to get in almost deterred me.  It looked a little bit like the lines at Disney Land, but we chose to stick around and really enjoyed it.  Jackson still talks about the pumpkin walk and wants to go back weekly.  What a great birthday and what sweet boys I have.  I am one lucky girl!

MILK DAY!

Our calendars now have a new holiday on them.  October 22nd will now be forever known as "Milk Day."  Back in June Carter started a new, semi-controversial trial at the allergist in Layton.  A few studies have been done with building up people's tolerance to the foods they are allergic to, and they hope to have it FDA approved in 5-10 more years.  Our good doctor doesn't want to wait that long, and neither did we.  So in June he launched this new service at his office and Carter was his very very first patient to go through the process.

Day One:  We spent 7 hours in the Dr's office and throughout those 7 hours Carter took a new dose of milk every 20 minutes.  His very first dose was something like 1/100th of a milligram of milk.  And by the time he finished the day he was drinking 0.3 mL of real, whole cows milk.  They had to watch him close and monitor his breathing to make sure his body could tolerate it, and surprisingly it could.  It was absolutely amazing to see my son drinking milk as previous times he had small amounts, he ended up in the ER struggling to breathe.  He was sent home that day with VERY strict instructions and protocols.  He had to have his dose of milk twice a day, 12 hours apart, and couldn't exercise or expend too much energy after his dose for 2 hours.  If we forgot even one dose, it could risk a huge reaction and having to start all over.  He would maintain the current dose a week and then come back and they would increase the dose in the office.  And repeat 20+ times.

Carter sailed through this process and didn't fail any challenges and never had any sort of reaction.  He never had to decrease an amount.  He went from drops of milk a day, taken out of a syringe, to drinking so much milk that he needed a cup!  It took Carter 4 months to sail through the program.  It was intense.  The protocol was stressful as time as we had to plan some events around Carter taking his milk and sometimes packing a syringe of milk on ice, to ensure we hit the strict time restraints.  Not to mention the 1-2 time weekly appointments in Layton, 1+ hours away.  For 20 weeks we drove 2 1/2 hours round trip for a 1 1/2 hour appointment.  But we considered ourselves Very lucky to be able to participate in this program as there are only 2 other locations in the United States who offer this.  Our doctor has patients flying in weekly from California to be able to participate.

October 22nd was Carter's last day of the trial.  Once he saw the doctor he was cleared to eat anything he wanted.  During the trial he was not allowed anything with milk in it, except the dose of milk itself.  We had planned and dreamed about this day for a long, long time.  Carter had his menu planned for weeks.  He was excited to see a little celebration planned in his honor.  A certificate and balloons to celebrate his hard work!

Carter's amazing nurse Alisa and Dr. Jones.  Not to mention their first patient to finish the course!  We planned on waiting until we got back to Logan and picked up Neil to give Carter his first taste of something with milk in it.  But the Dr. has hershey kisses planted around his entire office as decorations and a sample bowl at the front desk.  Carter couldn't resist waiting and I couldn't say no.  So he ate a Hershey's Kiss right then and there and declared it "The most delicious thing" he's ever eaten..

Once back in Logan we started our Food Binge 2013.  Carter planned that he wanted to stop and get a cheeseburger at A & W, along with gourmet cupcakes, and Neil surprised him with a Kit Kat.

Everything was a hit for him and he devoured each new thing in record time.  It was so surreal to sit there and watch my little boy eat all these things that use to be forbidden and dangerous to him.
I'm not sure why he chose A & W but he was thrilled with his choice.
He preferred the chocolate cupcake over the cheesecake cupcake.  Chocolate is turning out to be one of his favorite foods!  After this binge we dropped him off at school with a note to his teacher that he could now eat anything she served in class!

Later that night we continued the party with Neil's parents and cousins.  He was dying to try Little Caesars Pizza and breadsticks.  Turns out, the pepperon's are a bit spicy for his liking but he remedied that by tearing them off and still eating the pizza.
And let's be honest, who doesn't love a good breadstick?

After dinner we headed to Charlie's for the best shake in the United States(my opinion, but I'm sure everyone would agree).  Carter chose a cookie dough shake(my favorite) and loved it.  He also made sure to try a few bites of other's shakes and declared them all good.  Can you imagine living your life without tasting ice cream?  I couldn't and so I was so glad he was able to finally enjoy this with us.  We ended the night with a very full, very happy little boy.  It was truly a night that we will all remember.  As silly as it sounds, it was one of the best days of my life.  We have prayed for a long time to have Carter outgrow his allergies, and when that didn't happen, another great option came along.

The next day we had to burst his bubble just a bit by taking him to get blood drawn.  They want to track his blood levels and see what his body does with this shock.  His body still says that it's allergic to milk, but doesn't react anymore.  Over time, his body should adjust and his levels will all be normal.  He was fine until the lady came with the needle.  Then he began to cry.  He's done this way to many times in his short life.

The trauma was short lived and he was thrilled to sport a green wrap to show everyone.  We have enjoyed introducing Carter to new foods that he has been missing.  He was a little hesitant at first to try some new foods but he is getting braver and braver.  Things I thought he would love, like Mac N Cheese, he didn't.  But other things I assumed he wouldn't like, he does.  Go figure.  It did take him some time to enjoy the rich taste of some dairy items.  Regular old Cheese was one of those things.  He did not enjoy that at first and wanted his old soy Cheese back.  But with more exposure to it, he loves it!

October 22nd is already marked on our 2014 calendar as Milk Day.  We plan on celebrating this day each year.  The plan is to eat the same exact food each 10-22.

Side Note:  Technically Carter is still allergic to milk as this process didn't eliminate this.  It did trick his body somewhat in to building up a tolerance to milk and no longer rejecting it as bad.  So each day Carter must drink an 8 oz glass of Whole or 2% milk.  He is suppose to never miss.  There isn't enough research yet as to what would happen if he stopped drinking milk for a couple of weeks.  They fear his allergy would come raring back and so the risk isn't worth it.  I figure if a glass of milk a day is his medicine forever, it is well worth the trade off.

September '13

We had to finish off the summer with a visit to our favorite sno-cone shack in town.  "Pinks" was right down the road and we visited this place many times during the summer.  I wish I could say the boys liked it more than we did, but it also became Neil and I's favorite place.  Fresh cream, strawberries and ice cream in your sno-cone?  Yes please, and make it a large!  Even Jackson could get in on this treat as long as we did reduced syrup on his.  We got smart and brought our own bowl to put his in.

September brought Carter's first trip to bike Green Canyon with his dad.  He is as obsessed with biking as his dad is.

Carter participated in his school's Tri-School Trot to raise money for a computer lab.  He took this task very seriously and ran the entire mile, with only a couple little breaks.

September brought an emergency visit to Primary Children's on a Saturday for a cracked line.  Poor Jackson is such an old Professional at this that he made himself comfy during the procedure and fell fast asleep.  He didn't even cry when they made him mask up, which he isn't required to do at home.

He was so patient with the nurse who did the repair as she dropped sterile tools several times and had to start over 3 separate times.  After the repair was done he woke up and we treated him to his favorite cafeteria food downstairs!

We got a family hike in while the weather was perfect and Carter only whined about half the way:)

Sometimes there is no time to stop playing to get a diaper change until it is so wet that it sags to your knees.

Saturday morning cartoons with Daddy in bed is the best.

Kindergarten

Carter finally started Kindergarten On August 29, 2013.  He was so excited and very serious about the matter.  Grandma got him a great mountain bike backpack and dad got him a Ninja Turtle Watch, so he was set.  The only bad part of the deal is that he's not allowed to wear flip flops to school.  He is definitely my son and prefers wearing flip flops!

First day of school picture in his new clothes.

'
Jackson was feeling really left out so he jumped in the picture quickly.

We were lucky to have Neil join us and Carter was thrilled to see have him there.  Carter was very quiet and I could tell he was a little nervous although he wouldn't admit it.

Carter attends afternoon kindergarten.  In front of his school with Jackson
Walking to the school.  He was very anxious to get to his class and I'd read the paper wrong and we showed up 10 minutes too early so we had to kill some time.  He was not happy to wait.

He finally got to go into his classroom with all his classmates.  I didn't want to intrude so much so I didn't go in and take a million pictures.  I'm pretty sure he's a whole head taller than anyone in his class!

Carter gets to ride the bus to and from school but I made him ride to school with me on the first day.  He was thrilled to be able to ride the bus home and I made sure to meet him at the bus stop so I could snap some pictures.

Second Day of School:

On the way to Kindergarten the bus comes all the way into the neighborhood and picks him up right in front of the house.  It is so nice to just send him outside and not worry about getting him to the stop at the right time.
Both boys are so excited to watch for the bus each afternoon.  Jackson cannot finish his lunch if he knows its time for the bus to come.  He's slightly afraid of the bus when it gets close and jumps out of his skin when the driver puts the loud brakes on every day!

This is Jackson the first time the bus came to get Carter and when he realized he wouldn't be riding the bus with him.  He had a good cry about it.  Luckily he adapted quickly and is content to just see Carter off.

Carter has had a blast at kindergarten and goes with 3 other little boys in the neighborhood.  He loves his teacher and loves all the activities they do.  I hope his excitement doesn't wear off until college!
